AATA 35th International Conference

Marriott Sydney Harbour Circular Quay

"Promoting Best Practices
 in Responsible Animal Transport"

The Animal Transportation Association (AATA) convened in Sydney, Australia May 10-13, 2009.  As animal transportation providers we recognize the need to focus on all the aspects relating to the safe, humane transport of animals.  Animal welfare during transportation is an issue that has gained more visibility over the last few years and we are now seeing many governments, industry groups and the private sector place more emphasis on this issue.... an issue that AATA has long recognized as paramount when transporting all types of animals. This year's conference focused on what the industry is doing worldwide to improve animal welfare during transport.

This year we heard from government representatives and industry leaders explain how they are making a difference in the welfare of animals while being transported. We looked at various improvements and new knowledge that affects animals within the different modes of transport.

We also took a look at the OIE guidelines and how they are setting the standard for risk management of disease worldwide which is something that affects both man and animal. We examined how climate changes affect animals which in turn affects those countries where animals can be shipped to and from. We all know that with the modes of transportation in today's world, the world is becoming "smaller" and changes which happen in one part of the globe have far reaching effects.

Animal transportation is constantly evolving with new technology, changes to government regulations, and disease outbreaks. AATA seeks to provide the industry with the latest methods and up to date information to improve the welfare of all animals in transport.
