Heritage Park - a charming Old West Town

Getting ready to take the group photo

Trying to get friendly with the natives!

A Buckin' Bronc ain't just for anyone. Some get really confused!

Some are just way cool!

Some try to have a little class!

And some just go crazy!

Julian De Schutter, Vice President of Airport Marketing at Calgary Airport Authority, welcomed AATA to the activites for Tuesday evening.

As folks finished up their dinner, there was a commotion at the back of the room as we were invaded by bounty hunters. Seems they had a wanted poster for a real bad dude that was wanted for "transporting illegal pygmie marmosets across state lines."  The reward was $1.49CDN.

The bounty hunters searched until they found their bad guy (in spite of the lady sheriff telling them to behave and not cause any trouble in town).  The wanted poster didn't really LOOK like the bad guy so they made some modifications to the poster until it matched their suspect.  (That way they knew they had the right person!)  The rope went around his neck - Lou Rocha with his ballcap and all.  (In an act of benevolence, Malcolm returned the black cowboy hat he'd stolen from Lou at the Monday night dinner so he could be hung with his cowboy hat on - if it came to that!)

A defense lawyer-man. a prosecuting one and a hangin' judge (drawn from the audience), each made their case but the verdict was "Hang Him"!

A condemned man, he was being read his last will and testament when the lady sheriff came to the rescue!

Once the crowd settled down again, it was time to get serious for the
Annual Awards Ceremony

Starting a new tradition, with a pair of scissors the Past President did the honors of modifying the ribbon on the new President's nametag so it only said "President" (rather than President-Elect).

A special award was presented to the youngest AATA conference attendee, Dr. Gordon Doonan's 9 year old daughter.

In recognition of her efforts in organizing the AATA conference, Tim Harris (at the instigation and on behalf of his sister, Janine) presented Cherie Derouin with a special "gift" and read Janine's poem, sort of an Ode to Mr. Bubble. But, that's a story for another time!

Dr. Gord Doonan and Lou Rocha were thanked for their efforts as Program Co-Chairmen. (Lou was not pictured because he was taking photos!)

Jennifer Woods was also recognized for her role in helping on the program committee and playing a pivotal role in developing the Livestock Trucking Workshop on behalf of Alberta Farm Animal Care.

Calgary Airport Authority was the recipient of the Presidents Award in appreciation for their continuous support toward the organization and success of the conference.

The Robert Campbell Memorial Award was presented to Dr. Steven Leary from Washington University in St. Louis and Dr. William White of Charles River Laboratories in recognition of their outstanding contributions to the humane transportation of animals.

The AATA Public Service Award was presented to Dr. Malcolm Mitchell from Roslin Institute and Peter Kettlewell of Silsoe Research Institute in recognition of their outsanding contributions to the humane transportation of animals.

The Animal Welfare Award was accepted by Sean Hawkins on behalf of The Spay & Neuter Assistance Program of Houston, Cayman Airways, The Cayman Humane Society and the Houston Chapters of the Citizens for Animal Protection and the SPCA. These organizations were jointly recognized for rescuing more than 150 animals from the hurricane ravaged island of Grand Cayman in September 2004.

The AATA International Award was presented to Keith Meikeljohn of South Africa in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the welfare of animals in international commerce.

AATA's 2005 Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to Dr. Walter and Mrs. Millie Woolf in recognition of their many years of contributions to the animal transport industry in their veterinary practice and pet shipping business. Both have served as AATA Presidents and on the Board of Directors and have been mentors to so many for so many years.

At the conclusion of the Awards Presentations, Philip Jan-Peper from Martinair Holland NV invited the Calgary conference attendees to join AATA in Amsterdam in 2006. The conference will be held during the height of the tulip season, April 23-26, 2006 at Marriott's Renaissance Hotel Amsterdam.

Mark your calendars and plan to attend!
