AATA 34th International Conference
Westin Bellevue Hotel, Dresden, Germany

"Old Europe ~
Addressing New Issues in Animal Transport"

The Animal Transportation Association (AATA) convened in Dresden, Germany, May 18-21, 2008, where discussions and debates about new ideas from one of the grand, old cities in Europe.  The AATA goal for this conference was to continue building on its reputation to serve as a resource for those concerned with the humane handling and transportation of animals around the world.

Today’s environment sees too many decisions being made without the use of sound science or practical experience.  The AATA encourages experts in our industry to work together to identify problems and introduce solutions through the combined efforts of these experts.

The conference in Dresden continued to build on that goal by offering presentations in the areas of Security and Air Safety, a look at  the Cost of Animal Welfare,  Understanding Animal Rights’ vs. Animal Extremists along with multi-modal topics covering transport by sea, land and air.

We've listened to attendees from previous conferences who wanted (1) more free time for networking and the ability to (2) attend multiple workshops.

Tuesday and Wednesday morning featured a "Networking Coffee Hour" before the meetings started.  It provided a chance to meet with a colleagues from the other side of the world and time to talk to a supplier about your needs.  This was the perfect time to do it!

Workshops which were held Monday and Tuesday afternoon had three topics each day that were repeated twice.  This meant that attendees were able to attend four of the six separate workshops which were presented by experts in the areas of:

  • Transporting Day-old Chicks and more

  • Shipping in Water: Transport of Live Tropical Fish

  • Building a Better Crate: Specialty crates for Zoologicals and Exotics

  • Large Animal Rescue & Emergency Response

  • New Options for Transporting Dogs & Cats

  • Security Issues when Transporting Lab Animals

The Dresden meeting’s activities included the opportunity to donate and bid on items from around the world at our Silent Auction and a trip to the Lansgestüt Moritzburg, a stallion station founded in the 1700’s by the Saxonian Kings.  Attendees were treated to a stallion show and a guided tours through the historical buildings.

Monday’s “Fun-Nite-Out” was held at the Sophienkeller, in the historical centre of Dresden.  Guests stepped back into the 18th century world of King August the Strong, Countess Cosel, musicians, fortune tellers, magicians and strolling artists mixed with Saxon food specialties served by lovely maidens topped off with the famous funnel drinking, called “Dresdner Trichtertrinken”.  It was an evening not to be missed!

All in all, this year’s conference squeezed in more education, more information, more networking and best of all – more fun!  Dresden provided an opportunity for the “old world to teach some new techniques!”
